The lowest unit rate
is only one part of the comparison.

Assume one supply, 100,000 kWh a year, identical delivery periods and an annual standing charge of £365. The unit rates include all other modelled supply charges. Broker fees below are additional and not included in the rates. VAT is excluded throughout. These are invented teaching inputs, not market quotations, expected fees or savings estimates.

Fictional like-for-like annual comparison, excluding VAT
OptionUnit rateEnergy costStanding chargeSeparate feeSubtotal
Reference30p/kWh£30,000£365£0£30,365
A28p/kWh£28,000£365£600£28,965
B27.5p/kWh£27,500£365£1,200£29,065

On these assumptions, A costs £100 less than B despite its higher unit rate. Against the fictional reference, A is £1,400 lower after its separate fee. This comparison does not assess credit, service quality, contract flexibility or risk; those must also enter the decision.

Then separate the actual-volume effect.

If use under A were 95,000 kWh, its subtotal would be £27,565. The £2,800 difference from the reference reconciles as £2,000 from the unit-rate change at 100,000 kWh, plus £1,400 from 5,000 fewer kWh at the new rate, less the £600 fee. This is one stated calculation order; do not add another overlapping price-and-volume calculation.

The lower consumption is not automatically an efficiency saving. First examine occupancy, weather, area, service changes and meter accuracy. The example claims no benefit for a real care provider.

A completed decision entry

Illustrative finding: A has the lower modelled subtotal after fees. Outstanding evidence: contractual scope, care constraints and service commitments. Approval: no commitment until the authorised signatory has reviewed those matters. Verification: finance checks the first invoice against agreed rates and estates reviews consumption with the manager.
